Since several weeks ago, i has been enjoying myself by playing NDS game called Donkey Kong: Jungle Climber. Yes … From the title, all of you must already know, this game is one of three Donkey Kong game which was released for Nintendo DS. Talking about one of this Nintendo’s mascot is actually have made quite an interesting history to scrutiny. Even not as popular as Mario, Donkey Kong is one of the oldest and the most consistent character that always appear in every Nintendo platform. I also enjoyed play Donkey Kong on NES and Donkey Kong Country on SNES. Therefore this time I’ll try to covered all things about Donkey Kong. Let’s see about the history first.
How Donkey Kong created?
Donkey Kong character created by Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the legendary Mario Brothers and Zelda series. Donkey Kong itself could be regarded as the first successful character made by Miyamoto in his career in the world of gaming.
Donkey Kong’s character creation occurs after Shigeru Miyamoto got a task from Nintendo to renovate a game called Radar Scope that has a poor outcome to be a quality game.
This Radar Scope’s hardware then has been used by Miyamoto to create first Donkey Kong game.
In 1981, Falcon created a legitimate clone of Donkey Kong known as Crazy Kong. Donkey Kong Brand itself has a copyright issue problem, because MCA Universal ever sued Nintendo for Donkey Kong’s figures that is very similar to King Kong. Universal ultimately unsuccessful claim anything from Nintendo, because apparently the Universal did not own the copyright to King Kong either.

The games have been developed by a variety of developers including Nintendo, Rare, Namco and Paon. Most of Donkey Kong games developed by Nintendo. Since the first Donkey Kong game released for arcade in 1981, there are more 20 games released after that. Donkey Kong series is among the best-selling video game franchises with over 49 million games sold worldwide. Second Donkey Kong game developed by Rareware and become the sequel of first Donkey Kong Country. This time, Donkey Kong can’t be played as playable character, because he was kidnapped by King K. Rool. The main character of this game are Diddy Kong and his girlfriends Dixie Kong. Together, they travel and take some adventures in Crocodile Isle to save Donkey Kong from Kremling Krew. This game offers more level and more detailed graphic than the first game. DKC2 also offers many hidden bonus stages with collectible tokens (Kremcoins) and rare DK coins.

The game introduce a new playable characters again, Kiddie Kong replacing Diddy Kong who had been missing with Donkey Kong this time. Kiddie Kong is Dixie Kong cousin. Both of them must discover the location where Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong missing on fishing trip. Meanwhile, Kremling Krew return to stealing the banana once again. Unlike the previous game, the game feature sea adventures theme.

This game developed based on Donkey Kong Country 2, but with more simple graphic design and levels. It was enchanced for Super Gameboy with different shades of color. Donkey Kong Land 2 more like a remake of Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest. The playable character are exactly same, they are Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong. They have to save Donkey Kong from King K. Rool and Kremling Krew.

And now its time for Dixie Kong and Kiddie Kong to discover it too. This game’s graphics also enchanced if played in Super Gameboy.

Each world contains several race tracks, an unlockable battle stage and a race against a boss character.

The songs in this game picked from several Nintendo Games like Mario series, Legend of Zelda series, and other Nintendo music.

The gameplay of this game involves combat, jumping and counterattacking. The gameplay quite unique, because you move Donkey Kong by DK Bongos. Hitting the left drum make DK move to left, while hitting the right drum make DK move to the right. Hitting both of drum will make DK jump. Clapping one hand or hitting sides of drum will make DK to clap. The goal of this game is to get as many point as you can.

Mario who work on the factory tried to get back the toys by chasing Donkey Kong. This game is a combination of Donkey Kong Arcade version and Super Mario Bros 2. The gameplay itself offers some puzzle elements challenging Mario to find keys, reach the unlocked door and rescue mini Marios. The control similar to Donkey Kong Gameboy version. Mario have an ability to perform handstands and backflip.

Rool steals the medals, prizes in the competition, and proclaims himself the jungle hero. In this game, player will control either Donkey Kong or Diddy Kong, to track down King K. Player will take control of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. The gameplay is similar to Donkey Kong Country series. There will be mine chart level, swinging game, collecting banana and coins. The main difference this game compared to previous Donkey Kong Country series is the enemy. The antagonist is not filled by Kremling anymore. It replaced by Tiki.

Cranky Kong

He’s the father of Donkey Kong who always complaining and give advice for Donkey Kong. Although it has been in controversy, but Rare (developer of Donkey Kong Country series) state that Cranky Kong is the same Donkey Kong who battle with Mario in Donkey Kong Arcade. On his youth, he kidnapped Pauline and must battle with Mario who tried to save her. But based on some Nintendo official materials later, the characters who fight with Mario in the first Donkey Kong game is Donkey Kong, not Cranky Kong. His first appearance is on Donkey Kong Country as Cranky Kong, the eldest who usually give some advice for Donkey Kong.
Diddy Kong

The name Diddy is a slang word used in some parts of northern England for “small”. He is the second playable character in the first Donkey Kong Country game. He help Donkey Kong to defeat King K. Rool who stealed bananas from Donkey Kong Island. Then, he appears again in Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest as the main playable character accomponied by Dixie Kong on search mission of Donkey Kong after he kidnapped by King K. Rool. He then saved by Dixie Kong and Kiddie Kong. After Donkey Kong Country series, Diddy Kong appear in several games like Diddy Kong Racing, Donkey Kong 64, Donkey Kong Land, etc. Diddy Kong is Donkey Kong’s nephew
Dixie Kong

She is Diddy Kong’s girlfriend and Tiny Kong’s elder sister. She also have two cousins, Chunky Kong and Kiddy Kong. After accomponied Diddy Kong in Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest, she become main playable characters in Donkey Kong Country 3 : Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble. With Kiddie Kong, he must save Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong from King K. Rool. She become the first female playable character in Donkey Kong series. Her hair can create Helicopter Twirl to make her stay in the air for longer time.
Candy Kong

Candy Kong is Donkey Kong’s girlfriend. Her first appearance is at Donkey Kong Country. She usually stand on Save Point that allowed players to save their game. She was the first female Kong characters in Donkey Kong series. After appear in Donkey Kong Country series, she also appear to provide instrument in Donkey Kong 64.
Kiddie Kong
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 3 : Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble
Kiddy Kong is the youngest member of the Kong Family. He is the second playable character in Donkey Kong Country 3. With his cousin, Dixie Kong, he doing adventures in search of the missing Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. He has great strength and is able to throw Dixie high up in the sky. Despite this he can bounce on water, which somewhat compliments Dixie’s Helicopter Twirl. When defeated, he pounds the ground with his fists and cries loudly.
Wrinkly Kong
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest
Wrinkly Kong is the wife of Cranky Kong and mother of Donkey Kong. Wrinkly Kong is an intelligent Kong. Regardless of her death, her spirit continues participating in games, and aiding Donkey Kongs to defeat King K. Rool. She appears in most of Donkey Kong games but not as playable characters. She provides information or hints (similar to what Cranky Kong doing).
Funky Kong

Like the name, Funky Kong is a kong who have eccentric outlook. He always wear a glass and headband. He is one of Donkey Kong‘s best friends who usually offering some service (usually related to airplane) to his friends. Unlike most of his friends, Funky Kong doesn’t like adventuring. His hobby include such things as surfing and building various machinery such as vechiels and weapons.
Swanky Kong
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest
Rich member of the Kong Family who usually hosts game-shows and other types of money making competitions. His first appearance is on Donkey Kong Country 2. Swanky give several quizzes in every area about the game.
Chunky Kong
First Appearance : Donkey Kong 64
Chunky Kong is a new character created after Donkey Kong Country series. He is the elder brother of Kiddy Kong and the cousin of Donkey Kong. He is the strongest of the Kong Family but is somewhat meek. In Donkey Kong 64, he is one of the Kongs captured by the Kremling Krew at start of the game. Despite his big body, he acts somewhat cowardly and childlish. He also doesn’t like heights.
Tiny Kong
First Appearance : Donkey Kong 64
Tiny Kong is Dixie Kong’s younger sister. She is also the cousin of Kiddy Kong and Chunky Kong. She is known for being both nimble and fast, and using her two Ponytails to accomplish different tasks. With only a few exceptions, she is playable in every game in which she appears.
Lanky Kong
First Appearance : Donkey Kong 64
Lanky Kong is a wacky looking orange Sumatran Orangutan who is a distant cousin of Kong family. He is one of many Kong captured by Kremling Krew in Donkey Kong 64.
King K. Rool
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country
King K. Rool is an crocodilian who is the main villain of the series. He is the psychopathic king of the Kremlings who constantly antagonizes the Kongs and steals Donkey Kong’s banana hoard. His most distinguishing features are the tic in his left eye and his golden belly. In King K. Rool’s most common appearance, he wears a red cape and a gold crown, but he is fond of adopting many other looks and costumes as well.
Animal Buddies
Animal Buddies already appeared since Donkey Kong Country game. Animal Buddies are the animals that help Donkey Kong and his friends pass through the world and explore the secrets and hidden path in every level. With Squawks, Enguarde is animal buddy that has the most playable appearances in Donkey Kong Country series. Enguarde is great swimmers and his pointed bill can be used to attack his enemy in the water.
Squawks

Squawks is one of the most appearances animal buddy in Donkey Kong Country. Squawks is not a playable animal buddy. He first appear in Torchlight Trouble level on Donkey kong Country. He helps Donkey Kong see ahead of dark level by bringing a bright lantern to lights up surrounding area.
Expresso
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country
Expresso is a large ostrich who wearing sneakers on his foot. Expresso can run at fast speeds and glide through the air by flapping his wings rapidly. Not like the other animal buddies, Expresso can’t attack enemies meaning he has no way to defend himself against threats.
Winky
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country
Since he is a frog, Winky can jump extremely high. He can also defeat enemies that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong cannot defeat. Additionally, Winky is one of Cranky Kong’s favorite animal buddies along with Expresso the Ostrich.
Glimmer
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest
Glimmer is a brown anglerfish living in one of the island’s sunken ships in the Krem Quay. Glimmer appears in one level on Donkey Kong 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest. In that level, he aids Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong go through the oily black water using the bright light attached to his head. Glimmer cannot be harmed by enemies and follow behind Diddy Kong and Dixie Kong.
Clapper
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest
Clapper is seal Animal Buddy who appear in the Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest. If the Kongs jump on him, he will cool down the water with his breath. Using his breath, he can cool down the boiling hot water or freeze water.

Rattly is a large green and red ringed snake whose body is coiled, allowing him to jump high through the air like a spring. Rattly is allied with the Kongs and is described as “rebelling” against Kremling Krew. With his superb jumping ability, Rattly would allow the Kongs to reach high areas normally unreachable by them. Additionally, Rattly can jump on enemies that Diddy and Dixie wouldn’t normally jump on (ex : Zingers and Spinies).
Squitter
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 2 : Diddy’s Kong Quest
A large spider with orange and black fur who possesses the ability to fire webbing from his mouth. The webbing will either act as a projectile that can hurt enemies or become floating platforms that can be used to reach high areas. However, he cannot jump on enemies. His jumping is inferior to the Kongs, but his ability to make plaforms by his webs make Squitter an important animal buddy in the game.
Ellie
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 3 : Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble
Ellie is the first Animal Buddy known to be female in Donkey Kong series. She can carry barrels and pulling them in from a distance. He also can collect water in her trunk so she can shoot it later at the enemies.
Parry
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 3 : Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble
Parry only appears in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble!. He is not rideable Animal Buddy, but he can move parallel to Kiddy and Dixie Kong’s moves and grabs any item he hits. This ability making him a wonderful tool to help Kongs collects item.
Quawk
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Country 3 : Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble
Quawks the Parrot is a purple parrot that appeared in Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong’s Double Trouble. He have phsyical perfomance that similar with Squawks, but different color. Unlike Squawks, Quawks does not have the ability of spitting eggs at enemies, but he can use his claws to pick up barrels and drop them on the ground to hit enemies.
Hoofer
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Hoofer is large black Wildebeest with yellow hair on his back. He is found on ice level on Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Hoofer has abilities similart to Rambi from Donkey Kong Country. This wildebeest can crush anything in his front with ease.
Helibird
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
The Helibird Parrots are a species who found in Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. They are a group of birds that work like helicopters, carrying Donkey Kong to higher places. They appear frequently throughout the game, mostly in tree areas.
Orco
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Orco (previously known as Shachee in Europe) is a large blue killer whale found simply wandering around aimlessly. Donkey Kong can come up to Orco and grab on to its dorsal fin to ride her. Like Enguarde the Swordfish, Orco can smash through anything on her front. She can also leap out of the water and reach extreme heights.
Flurl
First Appearance : Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Flurl the Squirrel (previously known as Ressar in Europe) is a red, lazy squirrel who usually be found sleeping in a tree. If Donkey Kong can grab Flurl’s tail, he will use Flurl like a parachute and glide through the air, which can allow Donkey Kong to collect airborne beats and reach new areas that are normally unreachable without him.
